How to Prep for Your Brow Tattoo Appointment (And What NOT to Do the Night Before)

Because good brows start before you even walk into the salon.
Why Prep Matters More Than You Think
Cosmetic tattooing isn’t like popping into a nail bar. Your skin is the canvas, and how you treat it before the appointment determines how well pigment takes, how evenly it heals, and how long it lasts. At Ira Bale Brows in South Yarra and Toorak Village, I spend as much time educating clients on preparation as I do mapping their brows.
Because here’s the truth: skipping prep can cost you months of frustration.

What to Avoid in the 24 Hours Before
Let’s get the don’ts out of the way first — because these are the mistakes I see too often:
No alcohol or caffeine → Both thin your blood, increasing bleeding during tattooing, which pushes pigment out.
No intense exercise → Sweat opens pores and can prevent pigment from settling.
No sun exposure or tanning → Inflamed, sunburnt skin won’t hold pigment evenly.
No waxing, threading, or tweezing → Freshly irritated skin is not a stable canvas.
No retinol or acids → Active skincare thins the skin and increases sensitivity.
What You Should Do Instead
Hydrate → Well-hydrated skin takes pigment more smoothly.
Moisturise lightly → Balanced skin = better healing.
Eat a proper meal → Keeps blood sugar stable and helps with comfort.
Get rest → Stress hormones affect healing more than people realise.
I tell clients: arrive like you would to an important meeting. Prepared, calm, and ready for something that matters.
A Story From the Chair
One South Yarra client turned up for her tattoo appointment after a night out. “I only had two drinks,” she insisted. Within minutes, we were fighting excessive bleeding that diluted the pigment. Her healed results weren’t as crisp, and we needed a bigger touch-up session.
By contrast, another client followed prep to the letter. Her skin was calm, hydrated, and stable. She healed evenly, her pigment retention was excellent, and she needed only a minor perfecting session. Same service, same pigment — completely different outcomes.
The Bold Truth
Your tattoo artist can be brilliant, but if your skin isn’t ready, even the best hands can’t force great results. Preparation is half the treatment.
At Ira Bale Brows, Melbourne, we don’t just tattoo brows — we prepare you for results that last. That’s why every appointment comes with personalised prep and aftercare guidance. Because the night before might feel small, but it’s the difference between brows that fade and brows that stay.
