Let’s talk about the truth no one wants to admit: your lash lift doesn’t just “wear off” — it gets sabotaged. By your skincare. By your sweat. By the way you sleep. And especially by Melbourne’s summer humidity.

At Ira Bale Brows, we do more Lash Lifts than we can count — and yes, they hold up beautifully even in January heatwaves… if you know what you’re doing.

This post is your cheat sheet for keeping your lashes curled, lifted, and glossy — whether you’re hitting the gym, walking Toorak’s streets, or sipping wine in South Yarra sun.

First: What Actually Breaks Down a Lash Lift?

Let’s get nerdy for a second.

Lash lifting works by softening the disulphide bonds in your lashes (the same bonds affected in hair perms), reshaping them over a silicon rod, and then fixing that shape. The result is a curl that lasts up to 6–8 weeks.

But here’s the catch: Heat, oil, and water exposure in the first 24–48 hours can completely unravel the process.

And even after that window, these things can slowly weaken the bonds, causing your lashes to drop or frizz early.

The culprits?

  • Steamy showers

  • Oil-based skincare (especially cleansers and heavy eye creams)

  • Eye rubbing

  • Mascara too soon

  • Salt from sweat (yes, your hot yoga class matters)

  • Sleeping face-down on the pillow

How to Prep in Summer: Before Your Lash Lift

1. Skip the waterproof mascara (for at least 3 days beforehand). It leaves behind invisible residue, no matter how hard you scrub — which can block the lifting lotion and lead to uneven curl.

2. Don’t come in sunburnt. Sounds obvious, but we’ve had clients rock up with pink, inflamed eyelids after a weekend on the beach. Inflamed skin means reactive skin — and that’s not ideal when we’re working near your lash line.

3. Avoid retinols or strong actives around the eyes. Just like brows, lash-line skin can be easily irritated. You don’t want flaking, peeling, or inflammation near the treatment area.

Summer-Proof Aftercare: 48 Hours Post-Lift

1. No water. No sweat. No crying. The first 24–48 hours post-lift are sacred. Do not:

  • Wash your face with hot water

  • Sweat heavily

  • Use steam rooms, saunas, or hot yoga

  • Cry at a rom-com (yes, we’ve seen this ruin a set of perfect lashes)

2. No eye makeup or lash products. Give the lashes time to “set.” Mascara can weigh them down and oil-based removers will weaken the hold.

3. Sleep on your back. Face-planting into a pillow is the fastest way to crush those freshly curled lashes.

Ongoing Maintenance in Hot Weather

1. Ditch oil-based products. That includes eye makeup removers, serums, heavy creams — even some sunscreens. Stick to gel-based or water-based products around your eyes.

2. Use a clean spoolie to brush them daily. Think of it as a mini blow-dry for your lashes. It keeps them lifted, separated, and looking fresh.

3. Protect from chlorine and sea water. Salt and chlorine are drying and can mess with lash integrity. Rinse with fresh water after swimming, and don’t rub!

4. Come in for a Lash Tint + Keratin Boost every 4 weeks. It revives the colour, nourishes the hairs, and helps extend your results — especially important in summer when lashes can get sun-bleached.

Client Story: H., 33, from Toorak

H. booked her lash lift before flying to Bali. She was worried it wouldn’t last beyond the first beach day. She followed every bit of our summer-proof guide. No water for 48 hours. No oil.

Brushed daily. Even wore her sleep mask like a shield. Two weeks later she sent us a selfie from Seminyak: lashes still curled, not a smudge in sight.

“Never doing extensions again,” she said. “These survived a scooter ride, ocean dip, and sweat-soaked hike.”

Why We Refuse to Offer Lash Extensions

Because we’ve seen what they do over time.Thinning. Gaps. Brittle natural lashes. And then clients walk in begging us to “save” their lashes with a lift — but sometimes, there’s not enough left to lift.

That’s why we focus on Lash Lifts at Ira Bale Brows — including keratin-infused options for added nourishment and tint to enhance depth. Healthy. Low-maintenance. Beautiful.

No infills. No glue. No drama.

Final Word

Lash Lifts don’t have to be fragile. With the right care, they’re the ultimate hot-weather hack — wake up lifted, even in 34° heat.

Just treat them like you would a fresh blowout or spray tan — protect, hydrate, and keep your routine smart.

And remember: when in doubt, your lash artist at Ira Bale Brows is one DM away.
